Book of the Month

Title: Born Yesterday: The Diary of a Young Journalist
Author: James Solheim
Publisher: Philomel Books

I found this book on my recent trip to South Hadley and the Gaylord Library.  I liked the idea right away – an infant keeps a diary of the first few moments of life – and talks highly of her big sister.  Much like when I watch my daughter as she stares intently at something that has caught her attention, you would give anything to know what she is thinking.  It’s like a G version of Look Who’s Talking… I love that movie…

Title: Jamberry
Author: Bruce Degen
Publisher: Harper Collins

I forgot to do an April Book of the Month – sorry – but May’s book is an oldie but goody, one that my little girl has enjoyed many times recently – it’s Jamberry! I know many of you out there know this book very well – so I don’t have to explain it’s appeal, but if you’ve never read this book, do yourself a favor and find this book! Read and enjoy every berry-licious page! Enjoy the beautiful illustrations! And, most important, enjoy this great book over and over again!

Title: My Daddy Snores
Author: Nancy Rothstein
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.

I love books that send a message – but sometimes you just want a silly book that makes you laugh.  This is certainly one of them!  See what the poor woman does – who is married to someone who snores like a train, a tea pot, and earthquake and more!  I also really enjoyed the Author’s website – visit it by clicking on the name above!

Title: Late for School
Author: Stephanie Calmenson
Publisher: Lerner Publishing Group, Inc.

I like books with a message – but even better when the message is more than just for kids.  This is one of those stories.  Basically, a teacher learns that his rule of NEVER be late for school is easy to say – but not as easy to follow.  The best part of this book is watching as the teacher keeps missing his transportation… a great, funny book that can teach everyone a good lesson!

Title: Yo! Yes?
Author: Chris Raschka
Publisher: Schoolastic

I almost forgot to post a new book!  That would have been a shame! This is one of those simple, but wonderful books that really benefit when you use voices for the 2 different characters. It’s a conversation between 2 young kids – one looking for a friend – the other offering his services! It’s funny and captures a great moment between 2 children.

Title: Every Autumn Comes the Bear
Author: Jim Arnosky
Publisher: Putnam Publishing Group

This book is actually a perfect winter time book – even though it says autumn in the title – this book follows a bear as he gets ready for his winter slumber.  I love every picture and every word in this book – it’s a gem that should be in every one’s library.  Jim Arnosky has written two of my very favorite books – but this one tops the list.  Check it out today

Title: Actual Size
Author: Steve Jenkins
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin

I was reminded of this book this past week by a friend who told me that, after I recommended this book to her for her son, she read it all the time to him. He loves the pictures and how each page has something large, cool, and sometimes scary! Jenkins illustrations are perfect to capture any kids imagination – make sure that you check out his webpage by clicking on his name above. He has a website that helps journey through his books in a new, magical way!

Title: Winnie the Pooh
Author: A.A. Milne
Publisher: Penguin Group

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet a group of Home Visitors today – and talk children’s literature with them.  I love talking books with other people who share that passion.  It had me thinking of some of the classics – and a scene in particular from the movie “Beautiful Girls” where Timothy Hutton tells the very young Natalie Portman that he can’t be her Christopher Robin.  He explains “That’s how the story ends – Christopher Robin grows up and he doesn’t need Pooh anymore.”  It’s such a sad, beautiful end to a fantastic story.  It started me thinking about all of the books I need to share with my daughter – including this treasure.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Christopher Robin always needed Pooh?

Title: A Letter to Amy
Author: Ezra Jack Keats
Publisher: Puffin Books

The start of the school year brings lots of things – new school clothes, school supplies, the leaves change, and the weather gets colder. I love the fall. It’s my favorite thing ever. So with that I bring you a very special book called A Letter to Amy. This book feature Peter getting ready to have a birthday party. He invites all of the boys he knows – but he also wants to invite someone else – a very special guest, Amy. He writes her a special letter – but on the way to the mailbox a very unfortunate thing happens… I won’t ruin it for you but you should check it out today!

Title: 365 Penguins
Author: Jean-Luc Fromental
Publisher: Abrams Books for Young Readers

Hoo boy!  Where does the time go?  I realized I never even put up a July Book of the Month!  So sorry!  For that I will show you a book that makes me giggle every time I read it!  Here we have a story about a family who receives a penguin for every day of the year.  It’s such a distracting, hilarious premise that kids don’t even realize they are learning about math.  And the ending is one of the best I have ever read in a story.  Not to mention there is a “Where’s Waldo?” quality to the book where you have to find the penguin with blue feet on each page – and it gets harder and harder with each passing day!  Pick this book up for an uproarious good time with your kids!
